"Play Ball with Major League Stars"
"Manage Top Players of American and National Leagues who perform exactly as in Real Baseball"

These are the words that lured young budding managers of the 40's thru the 90's into countless hours of All-Star baseball games on kitchen tables, living room floors, and front stoops all across America.  The shuffle of the player disc, the flick of the spinner... a base hit up the middle!   All-Star Baseball by Cadaco is a baseball game utilizing round discs depicting the batting statistics of the individual player.  Segments of the disc correspond to the type of hits the player has had.   There is no provision for using an individual player's pitching, fielding, or baserunning stats.  Stolen base and defensive fielding outcomes are based on a static chart.

INTRODUCTION

HISTORY
I don't know much about the history of ASB, I'm piecing info together as I find it.  Any info/corrections are greatly appreciated.  All-Star Baseball was developed by Ethan Allen an ex-pro ballplayer.  Allen played in 13 major league seasons with the Giants, Phillies, Reds, Giants, Browns, and Cubs starting in 1926.  All-Star Baseball was first published in 1941 and was periodically updated until it was finally discontinued in 1994.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why a web site for Cadaco's All-Star Baseball?  Well, there doesn't seem to be a web page devoted to this game.  This is especially odd since it had been produced for over 50 years and was virtually the first introduction for everyone who has ever played sports boardgames (grin).  And while it is true that it isn't the most statistically deep game (especially when compared to Statis-Pro Baseball or Strat-O-Matic) it does a remarkable job of depicting a player's performance from a hitter's point of view.  Also, the mechanics are extremely simple and easy to play.  The game can be taught in less than 5 minutes and a complete game can be played in about 30 minutes.   This makes Cadaco's All-Star Baseball an excellent introduction to baseball boardgames as well as a way to get children (who typically have short attention spans) interested in sports boardgaming.

Doesn't the lack of statistical depth make the game boring?  ASB isn't as "light" as many believe.  More serious games use a method for determining whether ot not to use the batter's stats or the pitcher's stats.  When these games use the batter's stats, it is nearly identical to ASB's use of hitting statistics.  This is by no means an attempt to convince anyone that ASB's statistical depth is comparable to other stats-based boardgames.  Just an effort to keep things in perspective.  It's also a matter of taste and mood.  There is always a trade-off between statistical detail and speed/ease of play.  The more statistically rich games require multiple die rolls and table look-ups for a single outcome.  Depending on how I feel, this seems too much like work. :-)  There are times when I don't feel like an extended gaming session or simply want some light fun. ASB is perfect for those occasions.

I have a copy of All-Star Baseball.  How can I tell what year it's from? There isn't a sure-fire way to tell a specific year for a particular game, but fellow ASB fans have discovered that some player discs appeared only in a particular year.  By identifying these "key" players, one can narrow down the age to within a year or two.  The following chart is presented courtesy of Louis B. Wooding (Thanks Louis!):

OK you've convinced me, I want to relive a part of my childhood.  Where can I get a copy of Cadaco's All-Star Baseball? Cadaco no longer sells All-Star Baseball, nor any of their classic sports games.  Fortunately, old versions of this game are readily available at online auctions like ebay.  Cadaco ASB regularly sells for between $10-$30 depending upon condition and age.  Some online companies (specializing in out-of-print games) also have ASB for sale.

Click here for a quick search of ebay's auctions for All Star Baseball.  Thanks to some great sellers on ebay I now have excellent copies of 1989 and 1969 All-Star Baseball.  So the games on ebay are up for grabs...it's now a free-for-all! :-)
